From lessons to comps to social nights to exhibitions
|
Lessons are really just the beginning. They are always fun, they are rewarding and they are good for you (see why learn to dance). However, it is always more satisfying to be able to do something with what you have learned. For that reason, Destine Dance runs a number of other events that give you the opportunity to experience all that dance can offer.
Awards nights
If you have read the page about your progression, then you know about how medals are a way of tracking your progress and give you something to work towards to maintain focus and motivation. Medals are done at medal nights. At these nights the main focus is on supporting those students who are doing their medals. However, the nights are also social, and thus even if you are not doing a medal, then the medal nights are a chance to dance socially and meet with the friends you have made in the Destine Dance community.
Competition Nights
Comp nights are like a more informal version of a medal night. They are more casual and you will only dance once dance as opposed to dancing the entire set of dances for a medal. These nights are like stepping stones to keep you focused on learning as you work toward the next level of dance. Because they are like informal medal nights, you get that chance to dance socially and meet with friends.
There are also the mix and match comps that combine the elements of performance, dance sport and performances.

Social and open nights
There are also nights where the focus is on dance for the sake of dance and the studio is also open to others. These nights are heavily focused on social dancing and meeting people. However, a friendly Jack and Jill comp (where you are partnered randomly with someone for each round to give you a chance to freestyle) might be run. There might also be exhibitions where people who have been working on their own routine with their teacher will perform for everyone else.
These nights run on a Friday and Monday night and are preceded by a lesson. You can get more details on them from our meetup group.

Outings
These are the least formal of events, but they can often be the most fun and exciting. On occasion a group of students from Destine Dance will attend a social event somewhere locally, or maybe even further afield. Destine Dance will help facilitate these nights through its online community so that you know when and where you will be able to attend such events with others you know.
Group classes
Although they are lessons in the literal sense, each group class will include attention to social dancing and freestyle so that you get to apply what you have learned in the class and previously. These classes are also the content of the proficiency courses.
